Polynesian canoeing
is a modernized Vaka Ama, the old canoe with an outrigger well known in Polynesia, wich has the advantage of reaching high speed and stability in rough sea. This is the
challenge of strength and speed with individual and six manned canoes. These
canoes are boats that have been used in Polynesia for a long time and well proven to sail long distances. This sport was taken in Rapa Nui as a way of promoting young
people’s interests in Polynesian history and culture, encouranging them to understand and value Rapa Nui’s
role in Polynesian maritime history. This activity gives positive athletics opportunities to young people, celebrations of
marine skills of the Rapa Nui people with members of the Sout
Pacific Islands and of other continents give them
a chance for cultural interchange.
